«And why are you anxious about clothes? Look at the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; but I tell you that Solomon, in all his glory, did not dress like every one of them».

Описание

King Olaf of Norway is one of the most revered Christian saints in Scandinavia, and is also the last common Saint of the Western and Eastern Churches. He was the Baptist and educator of his people and died in battle on July 29, 1030. Now this date is celebrated as St. Olaf's Day.

According to the Canon, on icons he is represented in a crown, and in the right hand holds a battle axe or an axe, which was wounded in his last battle (sometimes instead of an axe in the hand of the Saint is depicted a spear, less often-a sword). On the one hand, it is a weapon of the Northern warrior, on the other – a symbol of martyrdom. As Olaf fell in battle, copies of the axe that killed him began to appear in various temples – for example, in the Church of St. Olaf in the Swedish province of skone. It was believed that if you put it three times to the body, a person will be cured of all ailments.

Images of Olaf with an axe are widely distributed in Northern Europe, as well as in England on frescoes of cathedrals and in Church sculpture. The axe of St. Olaf also adorns the coat of arms of Norway.
