St. Andrew's cross is a common symbol that is depicted on the flags of many countries, and in some countries it is used as a marine symbol. What does it mean?

The origin of this symbol dates back to the early Christianity. Apostle Andrew was the first one who was called to be a disciple by Jesus Christ, so he was called the First-called. Apostle Andrew tirelessly preached Christianity in many lands of Northern and Eastern Europe and was martyred on the cross. According to the legend and the Primary Chronicle written by Nestor the Chronicler, he also visited the territory of Ancient Rus.

Saint Andrew is considered the patron Saint of sailors. According to a legend, he resurrected forty men who were going to him to receive the Doctrine of the Faith, but drowned because of the storm. According to another legend, the Apostle managed to calm the raging sea with a prayer.

It is known that Peter the Great considered him as his patron Saint. In 1698, the Tsar-reformer established the First medal in Russia – which he awarded for military exploits and public service – the medal of St. Andrew the First-called. Peter the First also drew 10 drafts of the flag for the Russian Navy, and described the latest version as follows: "the Flag is white, there is a blue St. Andrew's cross on it, with which he blessed Russia". In such form the St. Andrew's flag had existed for the Fleet until November 1917. In January 1992, the government returned the status of the Russian naval flag to the St. Andrew's flag.

St. Andrew's cross symbolizes the first letter of Christ’s name (‘Христос’ in Russian).
